Using Artstor: Home

Artstor

Artstor Digital Library:

•A database of over 2 million digital images (with metadata)
•Drawn from collections worldwide throughout human history
•Topics: architecture, art history, archaeology, history, religion, theater, fashion, decorative arts, etc.
•Contributing institutions: MoMA, Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Louvre, National Gallery in London, etc.

Get Started

  • On campus: from the Curtis Library homepage, select "E-Resources/Guides," then select ARTstor from the pull-down menu.
  • Off campus: you will be prompted to sign in. Use your Curtis login (firstname.lastname) and password.
  • If you like, create your own Artstor account, using whichever email and password you wish. This will allow you to use the special features like groups and sharing.

Organizing Images

Groups and Tags

  • Create group from image detail only
  • ProTip: Create a group for a project you are working on: class presentation, essay, etc. Use tags to describe subjects, content, etc.
  • Browse Artstor curated groups for subject areas
    • Narrow down using tags (on left—displays number of groups), then select from group on right (displays number of images)
    • ProTip: Save an Artstor group as your own to edit and reuse it.

Downloading and Sharing

Sharing

  • Download image, or download group as PowerPoint
  • Download as zip file (also includes metadata in html file)
  • Link to image or group—receiver will need to sign in to Artstor to see it

Searching

Keyword Search: searches all terms entered from the main page

  • Narrow results using the "Filtered Search" options on the left side.
    • Search within all collection types to get the best results
    • Geography--select a region
    • Classification--type of work or discipline (fashion, paintings, sculptures, etc.)
    • Date--select a date range
  • Search within results—check box and replace with text

Detail page

  • Click on an image thumbnail for the detail page.
  • Zoom in and out using the mouse or + and - buttons
  • Right pane: information about the image

Advanced Search

Browse

  • From the home page under "Browse" on the left, click on one of the areas. Then browse through the images or narrow them further using the Filtered Search options.
